Women in this country are subordinated by men and there are a lot of views that describe that women are responsible for the honor of their families. So if any men do something incorrect like dishonor his family, like stealing, raping or any other crime, the women would be the one who has to apologize or rectify for the behavior of her brother, son or husband. So, the woman is responsible for maintaining the family honor.

Women and Society:

Society indicates women’s mobility. This means that women cannot go or do just whatever they want to, they need to ask for permission probably to her husband or son, and if this is a serious reason, they approve it. They also have to wear a burga or chador; these are two types of veil that women wear. The first type of veil called burga is a fitted body veil, and the second one called chador is used as a head covering and body veil. Is expected that the women of the upper and media class, live under the constraints of Purdah, which is the practice that includes the isolation from public observation by wearing concealing clothing from head to feet. The Purdah’s practice depends on the class level and the country; also the material of the veil and the quantity of how much the women is covering her body and face.

Pakistani society usually adopts a very unfriendly attitude towards the women.
Women in rural areas have to do domestic and outside work. Also because they are responsible for transplanting rice seedings, weeding crops, raising chickens and selling eggs. However, women are an important member of society that plays a vital role in building the society.

Where women's rights are not considered...

Young women who was kidnapped and raped. When she went to the police, they raped her too.

Women are not protected against domestic violence or attacks with acid. They are in a shelter.

A 19 years old girl who lost her first baby because her in-laws didn’t want to give her permission to go to the hospital. She was in labor for five entire days.

There is a woman who suffered a lot too, she is Mukhtar Mai.

Mukhtar Mai’s story began when her 12 years old brother was falsely accused of a sexual indiscretion in 2002.

Mukhtar that in that time was 30 years old, tried to smooth things over with her brother’s accusers out of village councils. They told her that she had to pay for her brother’s offense, and they took her to another place and was raped for several times by four men.

After this, she had only one way to restore her family’s honor, by taking her own life.

Here in this video, you will see the complete story and an interview. It’s a kind of documental of what happened to her. After all the suffering and crime against this woman, you can realize how somebody can turn all this suffering in something good, not just for her but for every women and children.

She created a girl school with the money she gained “making justice”, but the most important of all is that she created a shelter where women who had been through similar problems can feel safe, self-confidence, secure and not afraid to be exposed again to the same kind of violence.

  1. It's terrible that in this country women have not freedom. That a woman has to ask for permission to her son is absurd. Hernán Olivares

  5. I think that it is very unfair that the women have to be responsible for everything bad that the men do ,men could be responsible by themselves.
Another point that it is very important here is that women cannot do whatever they want to because they need to ask permission to her husband, what is it that?, this country has to evolve like the rest of the world ,we are in 21 century, this it is unacceptable because they cannot feel free and literally they are slaves of her husbands.
I could not live in that situation.

  7. That's what happens in Pakistan! It is possible that in this century atrocities still occur as described in the blog!
As we can hold on and shut it? We are human beings and all have the same rights regardless of religion everyone! It's easy to forget that such aberrations are occurring today!

  8. I know is bad what is happening there because actually there is no progress in women's rights at all. But everybody knows that or at least now we do but, we don't do anything about it. We think it is terrible and then we forget it? I prefer saying that it is really bad, maybe I would kill myself too, but I can not do anything about it or maybe I can but I won't just as everybody else that thought that the way women are treated in Pakistan is sad.

  16. It’s incredible how women have to deal with the responsibility of the men in the family to protect their honor. The case that you present is unbelievable, how a poor woman had to defend and protect the acts committed by her brother and how she was abused by the police, what else can we expect from a society in which failure to protect the helpless and where they see themselves with disadvantaged women's rights, absolutely nothing.
The most important of all is that she created a shelter where women who had been through similar problems can feel safe and also the girl school with the money she gained but she will have to load a stark reminder for the rest of her life.

  17. In Pakistan women are subordinated to men and they have to charge with the honor of men simply because of the actions of women in the families, this is unthinkable. They are not permitted to be in contact with the opposite sex. Being a whole life inside the house can not let them to even think about sharing same possibilities as men. Being an islamic country this must not be difficult to understand.

  20. Thank you for shedding light on this important issue. It's disheartening to see that women's rights are still not given the consideration they deserve in some parts of the world. We must continue to advocate for equality and empowerment. On a different note, I'm looking forward to learning more about upcoming mobile phones in Pakistan. Keep up the great work!
